Jean Paul Gaultier Spring 2001 Runway Black Leather Top

The set of Jean Paul Gaultier Spring 2001 ready-to-wear collection gave a hint to what the models on the runway could be wearing. Imagine a dirt field with a huge wall of speakers as a background playing loud rock music. We bet that “Mad Max” or any other post-apocalyptic movie comes to mind first. What would the outfits be like? Jean Paul Gaultier seemed to have been thinking about this a lot. Mesh, asymmetry, denim, washed out/aged dresses and shirts, and of course aggressive biker-inspired leathers.
In the coverage of the show Vogue noted that “the styling overpowered the clothes”, but this really is what made separate pieces stand out in each look.
Just like this leather top that was shown on the runway in black and brown options, styled with a basic shirt under it. The top with knotted cutouts is a great and sexy piece on its own, but is also a perfect element in any styling experiment.
The back of this top is made of a soft mesh material that makes it even more comfortable to wear.
